PMx Power Modules

A modular power hardware system that allows engineers
to create a wide variety of power conversion applications.


Overview

Triphase offers ready to use power modules for AC/DC and DC/DC conversions and motor control applications. A power module contains one or more sets of power stacks, sensors and configurable output filters and is packed in an industrial grade enclosure with automated start/stop and emergency circuitry and air cooling. Triphase PMx modules are designed for flexibility and ease of use. Thanks to the unique DPS approach and Matlab/SimulinkTM integration the complete functionality of the converter can be changed in a single mouseclick. PMx modules are bidirectional and ideal for connecting multiple sources and loads with eachother. PMx modules are controlled by a real-time target (RTT) preloaded with high-performance voltage, current and motor drive software and is an ideal companion to design and prototype energy management control strategies.

The PMx modules are used for a wide range of applications in research and test environements, including:

  • E-storage interfacing (batteries, ultracaps, redoxflow batteries)
  • Load and source emulation and Power Hardware In the Loop (PHIL) (photovoltaics, batteries, ultracaps, grids, ...)
  • Grid support (active filtering, power factor correction, load balancing, ...)
  • E-machine interfacing (motor and generator control, doubly fed induction generators, motor test benches, ...)
  • Electric vehicles (drivetrain and energy storage testing)

PMx Configurations

PMx packages can be freely combined, and are available in 15 and 90 kW power ranges. Below is an overview of popular configurations, but feel free to contact us with other requests.

(1) Output AC phases are also suited for DC (=0 Hz AC). 2 AC phases are required per connected DC load/source.

PMx Reconfigurable Leg

Each PMx Power Module consists of a set of reconfigurable converter legs. Thanks to their reconfigurable nature, Power Modules can often deliver multiple functionalities. The difference is the software that runs on them.

The figure below shows a converter leg, its reconfigurable topologies and available measurements.

PMx Packaging

For design reasons, Power Modules come in multiples of three leg-packages. However, the Power Module presents itselves to the control system and the outside world as a single, monolithic system. Triphase distinguishes between Input (suited for grid connection) and Output (not directly suited for grid connection) packages.

The figure below outlines the packages of which a power module can consist.

PMx Modes

As explained earlier, PMx Power Modules are reconfigurable by nature. As an example, a PMx Power Module with two F30 output packages (=F60) can be used in the following modes, solely by exchanging the control software.
